Computer-aided engineering (CAE) is the broad usage of computer software to aid in engineering tasks. It includes computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided analysis (CAA), computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), material requirements planning (MRP), and computer-aided planning (CAP). CAE areas covered include:
Stress analysis on components and assemblies using FEA (Finite Element Analysis);
• Thermal and fluid flow analysis Computational fluid dynamics (CFD);
• Kinematics;
• Mechanical event simulation (MES).
• Analysis tools for process simulation for operations such as casting, molding, and die press forming.

CAE tools are very widely used in the automotive industry. In fact, their use has enabled the automakers to reduce product development cost and time while improving the safety, comfort, and durability of the vehicles they produce.

Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)
is the use of computer software to control machine tools and related machinery in the manufacturing of workpieces. It is use of a computer to assist in all operations of a manufacturing plant, including planning, management, transportation and storage. CAM is a subsequent computer-aided process after computer-aided design (CAD) and sometimes computer-aided engineering (CAE), as the model generated in CAD and verified in CAE can be input into CAM software, which then controls the machine tool. CAM user can easily generate streamlined tool paths, optimized tool axis tilt for higher feed rates and optimized Z axis depth cuts as well as driving non-cutting operations such as the specification of probing motions.
