How can we use The IT Guy in Operations

I happened to visit a course mate of mine in one of the software development division responsible for making /organizing coordination of software for the HQ offices. He was having a ball of time and so the others merely coordinating basic requirements with the real IT people who were making the soft ware. Similar each company has an IT department .

Many view that the IT department is existence is justified as spies on email account, camera and listening bugs etc to spy on cribs . The smart cribber actually crib loud knowing very well that they will be listen also and the root cause of problem will be noticed by the management

There is another function that IT department does ie be at help disk and maintenance level which is a necessary function for the organization ,Everybody is happy that server are running and they are at hand for any crashes that may occur.

However a recent study on employee engagement shows that of all the departments in a company, people in IT are the least engaged. Given that 60% of capital expenditures now are on IT related projects, this suggests a major problem in the making. So what gives? If about 33% of employees on average are truly engaged in their work. But only 26% or so of IT workers are really into their jobs.

So how do we engage IT guys as per the salary they are drawing if servers are running Ok AND NO CRASHES are happening, allow them to surf net till something happens.

Why cannot we employ them with project and operation team in planning tools in MSP and become a key player in planning operations with the Project head .That would be an exciting development assignment for them as they will feel useful to be part of organization mission and strategy oin project assignments .

I am always on lookout of somebody who can be part of my project operation planning in MSP /primavera and also monitor on daily basis on controls and boundaries as to how and when are we achieving the short term targets and long terms goals .

Who better than the IT guy to help the project planning tools as Project Managers are more busy with execution on ground
